Icons – Post Edit Effects

The purpose of this project was to create stunning, illustrative 3D icons to visually represent intangible software products, for marketing collateral. These icons were created through a collaborative effort between myself and a small team of 3D Generalists. The client chose to create these icons through 3D Modelling software for marketing versatility. Together we conceptualized unique objects to represent each software. My responsibilities were also to guide the art direction of each object to meet a cohesive look, and would be visually compatible with the company’s existing brand elements and guidelines.

After the 3D modelling was done, I was responsible for bringing the images to life. By editing elements, adding colour, depth, and details I gave the overall look a more illustrative feel. The combination of illustrative edits on technically beautiful models made for a wonderfully whimsical, yet grounded final result.

Below are some examples of the models before and after the final editing. The left side shows the raw object as it renders out of the 3D modelling engine. The right side shows the look after all post-edits have been applied.

rocket_split

The rocket was a prime opportunity to play with extra effects. I added contrasting warm and blue light, as if the rocket was flying close to the sun, over blue water. The lighting choices also reflect the accent colours of the rocket. Red like the fins, and blue to match the rocket flames added in post.

tv_split

This object is a throwback to the classic TV. Aside from brightening the image and adjusting the colours, a warm wash of light was added to represent the warm comforts of the home living room. Highlights and lowlights are subtle additions to the object, as well.

projector_split

The colour of projector was adjusted to a brighter hue for a more playful effect. The reels and film were edited to show depth and contrast, while the lighting flares were added to the lens to showcase the glass.
